WebI didn't realize the Etho clock outputs a monostable pulse, and he was probably trying to preserve it. What you said about water timing does make sense, like maybe lava only check every 8 game ticks to flow, but water checks every 4, so move the piston quick enough and it will fool the lava into waiting additional 8 ticks... or something.
